Pedal to the metal...

I somehow managed to finish the 65 pager due tomorrow, which weighed in at just over 10,000 target words. Aside from the time invested, the price I had to pay was to miss the Super Bowl (which I probably would have anyway) and not spend any time reviewing EVA terminology (which may cause some discomfort during the coming week's meetings). On the other hand, Galina and I did sneak out to the concentration of Asian shops near Beltway 8 and Bellaire Boulevard, where we ended up picking up some - for lack of a better term - t'ai chi shoes.
We also ordered a Domino's deep dish pizza for lunch, which was remarkably good. On the down side, Galina and I need to cut down our consumption of pizza, else we will assume the shape of your typical pizza, ifyanowhadimean.
I never realized how cheap DDR2 memory can be. My VAIO has 1 GB of RAM and will accept another gigabyte, which I bought for about $30 (when the rebate is taken into account) and will be installed the next time I shut down th VAIO. While at Fry's, I also picked up a 1GB RAM card for the Eee, which is already installed and now results in something more than 18K of memory free when I run Word under CrossOver.
One thing I found curious was the salesman's claim that underclocking memory can result in just as many problems as overclocking. I've not been able to find confirmation of this claim elsewhere on the Internet. If anything, everything I've found supports my intuitive feeling that underclocking memory (performing operations at a rate that is less than its stated maximum) doesn't adversely affect performance at all.
I note in passing that Cory Doctorow announced the birth of one Poesy Emmeline Fibonacci Nautilus Taylor Doctorow (with appropriate links for each name). I thought the name... curious... sort of the kind of name you expect to hear as a party to a royal wedding ("Do you, Poesy Emmeline Fibonacci Nautilus Taylor Doctorow, take this...), and I wondered how easy it would be to register such a name with the registrar of births, because there are an increasing number of instances where one must give out one's full legal name, and I would bet all such places are ill-equipped to deal with four middle names. Galina's first reaction when I told her about this was to declare the father "a pompous ass," and that was the most positive thing she said about him over the course of the next 30 seconds or so.
Time to hit the sack.
Cheers...
UPDATE: It took about a minute to upgrade the memory in the VAIO, or it should have, as I spent some time cursing under my breath when I saw that the machine's 1 GB was split between two cards, occupying both memory slots. Swapping the new card for one of the old ones, therefore, only added 512 MB to RAM, which was still enough to provide a noticeable performance boost and whetted my desire to replace the second 512 MB card, too.
