Sally to Sawpit...

Galina and I had promised some folks what seems like a few weeks ago that we would come visit their alpaca ranch, so early this morning, we departed the homestead at 7:15 am or so, headed over to the area of Telluride.
Everything went swimmingly up until we got about halfway up Route 550 from Durango to Silverton. At about that point, the road starts going up and there are no guardrails on the side of the road that opens up onto glorious vistas out... and down. Galina really doesn't like these kinds of roads, and after traveling with her for about an hour, I didn't either.
If we thought 550 was bad, we weren't at all prepared for what we encountered when we turned off the main road through the thriving metropolis of Sawpit onto County Road 58P. It went up, and up, and up. Nothing but hairpin curves and switchbacks for about two and a half miles.
The ranch at the top, though, was pretty neat. I was as taken with the owners' use of solar and wind power (no power grid up there) as Galina was with the alpacas.
Coming back, we were told of a shortcut that kept us from having to go back down the cliff in the car, but committed us to returning to Durango via Ridgway, Ouray (a nice spot surrounded by mountains), and Silverton. I slept most of the way.
Once we got back home, we sat down to some cold supper that Drew had prepared and then watched Miss Congeniality. The movie proves that people will do anything for money, though it was a treat to see Michael Caine do some acting to make up for his miserable role in Get Carter.
In other news, I received some nice words from the editor about my column that's to appear in the next issue of The SlavFile. Also, between yesterday and today, I managed to clean up about 15% of my office, and with any luck, I'll finish the job this week. Finally, when Galina and I returned home (after almost 12 hours out of the house) Drew had a buddy of his over and they were putting the finishing touches on painting the rooms that he and Shannon will be moving into soon.
Planning will have to take center stage the first thing tomorrow, assuming I don't get drafted to take a really expensive harp to Albuquerque and get it crated. We've had the instrument in the shop for a few days trying to figure out how to ship it and more important, how to package it. When I think of this thing inside of a cardboard box, I get a queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach and think "It'll never survive," but there I go, departing on another tangent.
Time to do a final check of mail, and then to sleep.
Cheers...
P.S. I am intrigued by the response to my previous post. Few of my posts normally elicit comments; that one must have set some kind of record with 12 as I write this. And really great comments, too...but again, I digress. Thanks.

What are you made up of?! Those kind of roads are maximum fun. I once remember taking a Prado on one such road and oh boy, that was the most fun I have ever had with my clothes on! Fair enough Prado being truck and all, but just braking late and sliding and then powering out through corners while mere centimeters from the edge ...haha, when we reached the 'top', the people in back seat were like
