We finally got down to laying tile in the office. Two rows so far. Not having water is a pain.

The plumbers were out using dowsing rods to find the supply line. They found it - which is a data point, I suppose, in the Great Dowsing Rod Debate (though I think an argument could be made that the line had to be where it was) - and then picked a point half way between the house and the meter, cut the line at that point, and isolated the leak to the segment between the cut and the house. A second hole is in progress, about halfway between the first cut and the house.

Interestingly enough, the water line to the house is only 2 feet below the surface of the driveway, whereas the frost depth is about twice that. Therefore, it would appear that the design of the system relies on a regular flow of water to keep the line from freezing. Go figure.

In another of life's coincidences, Drew called today to ask if I still owned the .25 automatic I mention in this week's LJ Idol post (AFAIK, he does not read my LJ). It would appear that someone was knocking on doors not their own in his neighborhood last night, and since he typically works late, that leaves Shannon and the kids alone. We got together later in the day to discuss the issue at length.

More Postcrossing cards arrived today. More got sent.

Three more days until vacation. I have to make them count.

Cheers...

It would seem to me that if the current line is above the frost line, the prudent course would be to abandon the diagnostics and dig a below-frost-line trench and bury a new line. Otherwise you're just going to have another freezeup. All because of Global Warming™, of course ;)

That might be the prudent course, but it'll cost a small fortune. I might consider doing it if I ever decide to pave the driveway, which will cost a large fortune. Otherwise, I'm thinking of resurrecting some old skills to make sure water keeps moving in the line from time to time, whether or not anyone is home.

Cheers...
