I've been trying to put a brave face on the recent machinations of the stock market, which is another way of saying I've been too chicken to do anything about the fact that the market is in the toilet, along with what one might laughingly call my portfolio.

Until today.

For me, a bird in the hand today is literally worth two in the bush (auld lang syne and putatively someday yet again, if you believe what you hear).

Cheers...

My sympathies... its not much better on this side of the ocean. I've recently attempted to withdraw some money from a super fund where a certain idiot agency has been depositing my money without permission... *sigh*. What looked like a nice sum ended up being halved.

P.S. I am seriously thinking of buying a piece of land and growing cabinet making timber trees on it. Possibly one of the best long-term investments around.

Hmmm.

As one with some small experience in the real estate market, I would personally stay away from an investment like that, from the point of view of:
  • liquidity (real estate sucks in that department),
  • timing (I assume it takes at least a decade to get decent-sized trees, and I think I'm being optimistic with that estimate), and
  • fragility (just saw a piece on preparations for fire season here in Colorado, while there is snow on the ground!)
However, you are closer to the reality and - most important - it's your dream, so don't mind me or other naysayers.

Cheers...

It is a rather risky plan, especially considering the size of fire storms in Australia every summer, and certainly a retirement plan rather than a "get rich quick" scheme. It sitting in the back of my mind only because I would really like to buy / live on an acreage one day (though not for at least 5-10 years), and it would be relatively simple to plan such trees on a couple of acres.

The cabinet timbers do sell well though. People always want expensive, beautiful furniture, and it has to grow somewhere, right?..
