As I may have mentioned before, making kombucha with store-bought sweetened iced tea was not a good idea, mostly because the initial product didn't taste too good to begin with. Besides the taste, the sweetness was provided by high-fructose corn syrup, which may or may not have played a role in the mediocre nature of the end product that, to its credit, did not kill or cripple me when I drank it.

A new batch was initiated today, using a "mother" brought from Pagosa.

Galina went out looking for furniture at garage and estate sales, and found a fairly nice convertible couch for $200. By the time she got there, though, all of the really good stuff had been picked off, for which our bank account is probably grateful.

The couch turned out to be nearly identical to the one left by our tenant for a friend of hers who came by today with a crew of teenaged boys to wrestle it down the stairs and into her car.

Natalie came over in the late afternoon, and among other goodies, brought along something called "BL," which turned out to be Bud Light with "100%" lime flavoring. She says she heard that some town in Alberta, Canada actually preferred this beverage to its own local product, which I find hard to believe, simply because I've had too much experience with folks and their loyalty to local brews. (I mean, it's not as if nobody has ever sold a six-pack of Bud in Shiner, Texas, but it would take some kind of Singularity for locals in that town to abandon the product put out by their local brewery.)

We had a pretty good time, and we even got some time in looking at some of my mother's papers that I had brought down specifically for this purpose. It was a "discoveries all around" kind of evening, as I read (for the first time) a letter written by a guy whose marriage to my mom eventually was annulled, if memory serves.

The "feel" I got for this fellow, just from reading the one letter, made me sort of happy he wasn't my dad, if such a sentiment makes any kind of sense. He seemed awful analytical, yet with no genuine capacity for analysis. Perhaps my first impression will change as I run across more letters.

Cheers...

I am sorry to say, that sounds like my idea of hell ;)

Well, for several years, now, bars have routinely been serving Corona Extra (a Mexican beer produced by Modelo) with a slice of lime.

Personally, I'm not a big fan, but you won't find too many unsqueezed pieces of lime in most places.

What gets me about the label is the claim refers to "flavoring." To me, that makes about as much sense as making a big deal of the fact that a product is "85% organic." In effect, both claims are meaningless.

In the end, though, you're about right: BL is not something I'm going to seek more of any time soon.

Cheers...

Yes, Corona with a slice of lime has become very popular here too. It's not too bad, though I do prefer Monteith Zesty ale - it's a New Zealand brew, very nice and crisp, and does actually have a lime taste (that's real lime, not lime cordial).

Although, from my experience with Bud, I prefer Australian or British beers any day. Do you know that Fosters is barely ever sold in its homeland, by the way?

I do wonder, is that meant to be "100% flavouring", or "100% *lime* flavouring"? I assume that's it's not 100% real lime, whatever they would like you to believe... ;)
