One of the things I find interesting about Facebook's privacy settings is that the layout of the pages appears to undergo regular redesign, and I cannot help but think that a major criterion of such redesign efforts is to make obsolete any third-party attempts to clearly explain how one might manage such settings and what the settings imply.

I logged into Facebook for the first time since leaving for Kazakhstan, and was presented with a page asking me to approve links to so-called "community pages" associated with places I've worked and schools I've attended.

Interestingly enough, unchecking a proposed link effectively deletes it from one's profile, so if you want to use Facebook to highlight, say, your employment history, you must accept these links to various "community pages," otherwise no entries will appear in your history.

The upshot of this is that unless you've otherwise hogtied your privacy settings to "Friends Only" or "Only Me," any time you mention an old employer (or almost anything else, for that matter) in a Facebook comment or post, said remark will appear on the associated community page.

Me, I'm looking forward to the launch of the Disapora application, whereupon I'll probably do my best to erase myself from Facebook.

Present generations appear to be compulsively 'communicating' whether they have anything to convey or not. I'm with you on the idea of leaving FB, but zero interest in joining Diaspora or any other similar interface.
