A pleasant Saturday night...
Aug. 3rd, 2013 11:29 pmThere is a mood that strikes the American contingent every ten days or so around here that impels them to arrange a barbecue, for which they will gladly contribute time and effort as cooks, gofers, and what-have-you. A couple of the Pinkertons, for example, invested nearly $30 in a couple of jugs of sunflower oil so as to be able to make decent chicken wings.
No, let me restate that: So as to be able to make incredibly excellent chicken wings. I cannot even begin to describe the way in which the crispness, taste, texture, mouthfeel, and everything else came together.
All of us—including the Pinkertons from the other side of the area—gathered in the hotel's dining room to partake of the incredible chicken wings, beef tenderloin, and chicken, to the accompaniment of French red wine (and stronger beverages).
At the conclusion of the dinner, I joined a game-in-progress over by the sauna and managed to hold my own in five card draw and Texas Hold'Em for a while. The next dealer then announced some off-the-wall game involving wild cards in which—if I had understood the rules correctly—I actually had a decent hand. Then the betting got completely out of hand, to the point where pretty much everyone had gone "all in." At which point it turned out my 'decent hand" had won. As it turns out, I'm still not entirely sure I understand how that happened, but I'm not going to chase people down and demand a do-over.
I tried to catch an Iridium flare at a few minutes after 6 pm, but I'm not sure anything transpired. I noticed nothing in the segment of the sky I was looking at. Ah, well... better luck next time!
