Seeing in the New Year...
Jan. 1st, 2014 10:32 pmThe noise level from various fireworks set off last night created an acoustic environment in our neighborhood similar, I imagine, to that during the final push into Berlin in 1945. It was quite disconcerting, at times, especially when a trip out the front door showed the sky to be overcast.
I searched in vain for something watchable on the Tube, because all of the special New Year's shows exhibited a spectacular lack of variety in entertainment (as opposed to "variety entertainment"), something that I only became aware of after finally setting down to see the last half hour or so of That's Entertainment II, a set of film clips that were strung together with commentary—and some song and dance—from Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. It was enough to make me nostalgic for music that did not jar the nerves and did not involve sticking out one's tongue.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not necessarily looking to listen to music in the style of Lawrence Welk or Guy Lombardo on New Year's Eve, but surely the folks in charge of programming could seek to address a demographic slightly broader than the infinitesimally thin section at which it is currently aimed.
Apropos of which, I was gratified to note that there at least a dime's worth of difference in the New Year's shows, in that the show hosted by Ryan Secrest apparently wasn't about to interrupt its flow to give Central time zone denizens any idea of when their local clocks were about to strike midnight, which made changing the channel to a program that did show a Central time countdown very much a no-brainer.
However, soon after the year turned, both Galina and I turned in.
Today went well. I put together and sent out some invoices for work done and sent in December, which pretty much finishes off invoicing for 2013. I see new work in the inbox already, but I won't take a serious look at it until tomorrow.
Cheers...
