Snow!

Sub-freezing temperatures with rain pretty much put the city into quiet turmoil overnight. Houston schools are closed, and most other area school districts have followed suit. Traffic delays caused by freezing rain and icy roads this morning caused the local news programs to preempt national programming (except that, after the first five minutes of coverage, there really wasn't anything else to say).

In our neck of the woods, Galina and I saw some flurries a little while ago, but by the time I grabbed my camera and got outside, they had passed on. The water on the pavement was not frozen this morning when I put the garbage on the curb, but anything sticking up in the air had ice on it. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by about noon.

If old computer hardware—say a circa-1983 Osborne-1—ever becomes seriously collectible, I would imagine that operable media to make things go would probably command a pretty high price. And I imagine the same goes the other way: if a copy of Borland's TurboLightning ever were to become collectible, wouldn't you need to have a working 5¼ drive, too? And wouldn't that imply having a working PC with DOS installed?

Just wondering...

I still have a box of unused Dysan 5.25 inch disks. I wonder when they'll be worth something. Maybe I should check eBay ;p

And I still have a bunch of drives from my 8 bit systems, both 48 and 96 tpi.

Snow! It's old-hat by now for us, but very thrilling for Texas! AW
