For whatever reason (or perhaps a combination of them), I guess the system considers me to be a Cyrillic user (the LJ home page displays in Russian). Or almost a Cyrillic user... I don't know.

I have just noted, upon bringing up said home page in my browser, that my recent LJ Idol post (“LJ Idol 9.10: If you have come here to help me...”) has "won 1078 place at the common top."

Whoo-ee!

At least, I think it's positive recognition. :^)

Cheers...

This number intrigues me for two reasons.
1/ "won 1078 place at the common top." sounds like you are in 1078th place from the top.
2/ Before I saw your statement, I had seen one on my own page that said"Your current position in the top journals is 846." As of today, it still says that.

a. As these are worded slightly differently, are they comparable statements?
b. I DO NOT believe that I am closer to the top than you are.

corollary: I guess we have Gary to thank for catapulting us into the stratosphere, such as it is.

Further thoughts: Would this placement reflect number of posts, number of words, or number of readers? You definitely have more posts than I do. I would also wager you have more readers.

Well, the message I saw referred to a particular post of mine, as in "Your post titled [blah, blah] reached position 1078 among most-read individual posts."

Your message suggests you have a sufficient number of ongoing visitors to be the 846th most popular journal on LJ. Is that a credible statement? I don't know, but I think it is entirely possible.

As for my own LJ, I imagine only a handful of people read my stuff outside of Idol posts.

I just checked: as of a few minutes ago, your user ranking is 835, and your "social capital" (whatever the heck that is) is 23. My respective numbers are 12,595 and 12.

I am also intrigued by these numbers. I never check stuff like this! *pokes own homepage*

Hmm, I'm not sure where one would find such information, but apparently I am no part of the common top. OH WELL???

Well, if you go to your profile page, you'll see you have a "social capital" value of 16 (FWIW, mine is 12, and I think the minimum is 10).

I suspect this parameter may be a measure of how much you interact with others on LJ.

I've investigated the social capital a bit, and yeah, it has to do with interaction, I guess? But I've never seen anything for specific post or journal rankings...

You'd think they would explain these numbers a little bit. As I always tell my students, a graph with no identifiers on the axes is useless. And as for your posts not having many readers, I always read almost all your posts. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment! (jk!)
