Happy Translator's Day!
Sep. 30th, 2000 07:08 pmWiser, or at least more imaginative heads than mine have designated St. Jerome as the patron saint of translators. And since today is St. Jerome's Day, it follows that today is Translator's Day. (I mean, it makes sense, right?)
This festive holiday was celebrated in grand style over at our homestead in rare style: we did nothing. Or next to nothing.
We began the day with a visit to a store I'd not been to before, a "hypermarket" called Auchan. The place is huge. So huge, in fact, that there's a McDonald's, a Taco Bell, and a Chinese fast food place - as well as some other stores - inside the building, out in front of the checkout cash registers.
Back in the main part of the store, there's a spectacular selection of products, including tofu, kefir, and a selection of wines that includes Mavrodaphne wine from Greece. (While I consume my share of ordinary food, I really like finding and trying unusual food I've never tried before.)
Among other goodies, I picked up some feta cheese made with sheep's milk. I don't think I've had this kind of feta, as most of the other brands on display that I'm familiar with appear to have been made with ordinary cow's milk.
On the way home, we stopped at the Pearland property. The neighbors are gone and their house is up for sale. The grass needs cutting, but not spectacularly so. We stopped at a Methodist church garage sale and picked up a nice rug for the living room.
Home again, we feasted on some of the food we bought, and napped briefly. Right now, I'm grilling a leg of lamb...and it's almost done.
Time to get ready for dinner. I'll raise a glass to St. Jerome.
Cheers...
