The Olympics are over!
Oct. 1st, 2000 07:28 pmThe Sydney Games are over, at least in real time. On television, they're showing a tape of the marathon event, to be followed by the closing ceremonies. The local news broadcast a story earlier about a local featherweight boxer who lost out on gold, apparently in large part due to poor refereeing. The story noted that in the aftermath of the event, the referee has already been suspended for four years, but the result stands. Too bad.
Just looking at the marathoners makes me tired. I used to run track and cross-country in high school - don't ask me why, because I don't know - and I eventually got to really dislike the mind-numbing monotony, particularly of long-distance running. Ironically, running does provide a number of benefits to participants. You've heard them all; I won't repeat them here.
If there's an area in which I need an improved attitude, it's in diet and exercise.
Segue.
I massaged the routines that parse my LiveJournal export data into a searchable index. A routine that took 323 KB of data and crunched it down to 283 KB now takes 334 KB and crunches it down to 188 KB. The secret lies in removing duplicate words and in removing all two- and one-letter words.
Cheers...
