A real roller-coaster of a day...
Oct. 25th, 2000 09:19 pmWhat is it about some small things that makes you notice them and then get upset about them beyond any normal expectation?
Being under the gun, timewise, to finish writing a document for my boss, I sent an e-mail to the person I thought was responsible for the company's safety program, asking for some details and apologizing for not stopping by in person, explaining that I was under a tight deadline. I sent a copy to my boss's assistant, to keep her in the loop as well.
Well dip me in oil if I don't get a response from both of them, separately and independently, to the effect that - in actuality - someone else is in charge of safety, and that I should direct my question to that other person. There is no indication or hint in either response that, mayhaps, my original message had been forwarded to the appropriate party, and taking a few minutes out to check confirmed that it hadn't, and that it was up to me to write another e-mail and ask for the information.
Am I missing something, here? When I receive such mail, I just naturally forward it to the right person, often sending a copy of the forward to the original requestor so they know I've done so. Then again, all things considered, this annoyance is probably hardly worth the energy it took to type it in.
Anyway, I did my best with the time I had (up at 5 am, no breakfast, no lunch). It's over.
Or at least it was over until I got home to find a month-old letter from our tenant in Colorado, to the effect that he was vacating the premises on November 1. That throws some pretty hard temptations in front of me, and I'm going to have to do some serious thinking while on my little "mini-vacation" to visit the folks.
The prospect of going back to Colorado is sometimes the only thing that keeps me sane, I think. Opportunity is knocking on my front door, or at least, that's what I think.
In the meantime, I have finally completed all of the steps necessary to switch my domain's technical contact, and the change is now percolating and propagating through the Internet like an egg through a hen. My first indication that something was happening was the receipt of an e-mail complaining that one of my site's scripts had gone south. As soon as I heard that, I realized that (a) I'd not fixed the proper permissions for the scripts on the new server, and (b) the change had been made official.
I had been a little concerned as - unlike my earlier changes to domain information, where an e-mail did the trick - this time The Powers That Be required a signed, faxed letter printed on company letterhead. Like most worries in life, this concern was misplaced and all is on track.
It's time to get things together for tomorrow's departure. Despite it all, I do plan to relax and have some fun.
Cheers...
