Odds and ends...
Apr. 13th, 2001 05:28 pmYesterday's experiment with embedded Cyrillic in an LJ post worked, at least if I use MS Explorer to view my work. Next step: how does it look using Netscape? Opera? on Linux (which uses KOI8-R to represent Cyrillic)?
One might wonder, why the big deal? While there is certainly a public aspect to posting on LJ, ultimately, the purpose is to create a journal for oneself, no? In my case, though, it's entirely possible I'll be using a Windows box in the morning, a Linux box in the evening, and never the same browser twice in a row.
I had been having some problems with blank Fuji CD-Rs at home. In particular, the 700-MB capacity disks record okay in a 640-MB burner, but then the whole process goes belly up when a seek done to write the TOC fails. Drew also was having problems, but I think the problem lies not with the disks themselves, but with the fact that I'm mixing a 640-MB drive with 700-MB capacity disks.
Specifically, I got the same error when using a 700-MB Imation CD-R, but not when using a noname-brand 640-MB CD-R. Now, at least, stage 1 of my plan to backup critical files from my Linux box is complete. Tonight, I back up all of my MP3s.
Sasha, the Dog Who Will Chew Anything had a seizure last night. The local vet wasn't able to do much last week, when Sasha had a series of seizures one morning, except prescribe some antibiotics, which have all been administered. I spent the rest of the night with the dog in the spare bedroom (Lee's, when she's here) so Galina could get some sleep, and it was a pretty fidgety rest of the night for both me and the dog.
Lee is coming back, it turns out. She starts back tomorrow morning. I can't wait.
Cheers...
P.S. My Cyrillic experiment is a flop, at least as far as Opera for Linux is concerned. The Russian characters simply do not show up. (It looks as if Gagarin said "!")
