Push, push, push!
Jan. 30th, 2002 07:59 pmThe dogs woke me up at around 4:30 this morning, and as I lay there, trying to fall asleep, I thought of all the things I had to do before leaving for Houston.
That woke me up.
Among other things, I had the editing job to complete (even though it's due tomorrow by noon to the client). I had to file 1009s with Uncle Sugar. I wanted to try to get the vision restriction taken off my license. I needed to talk to my accountant about a letter I got from the MailBoxes, Etc. dude. I also needed to bring Drew up to speed with some of the new routines I'd established for doing the postal reports.
All of that got done, except I think I need to reinforce the last item with some written instructions.
I got seven and a half documents edited by the time I simply had to go open the store this morning. Some documents had only a handful of changes; the last one had a bunch. I fully expect to be able to send this one back to the client tonight, along with an invoice.
The 1099s are ready to be typed after I finish editing the last document. I will file them tomorrow.
As I expected, the lady down at City Hall who does the license tests didn't put much stock in the doctor's note, but did allow me to retake the vision test. I squeaked by this time, and got a new (beardless, short-haired) mug shot put on my license. (Apropos of this, I am informed that a Muslim woman is suing the State of Florida because the state would not issue her a license unless she uncovered her face for a license photo. Ye gods.)
The meeting with the accountant really didn't tell me anything I didn't know, except that it helped organize my thoughts and I jotted down some notes for my response letter. Basically, I'd gotten a letter asking me to fork over financial data on my operation in exchange for a promise to use it only to evaluate whether to buy the store or not. So far, everyone I've spoke with thinks such a move would be a Bad Idea (thereby confirming my gut reaction).
It's time to break out a sheet of paper and create a checklist of things to take with me to Houston. I must not forget, above all, my NASA badge, but there I go, trying to compile the list in a post.... Tsk, tsk, tsk.
Lasagna is in the final throes of cooking upstairs, so I think I'll go and get myself a portion. Then I plan to finish the edit (45 min, including invoice); do the 1099s (30 minutes), and put together stuff for departure (until I decide to go to sleep).
I had planned to leave tomorrow at the crack of dawn, which would give me a good shot at making Houston in one semi-marathon drive. Since it's been snowing lately (and since we took the studded snow tires off the Ford so as not to tick off the cops down south), I fully expect the roads to be - at the least - icy come morning. I'll probably depart some time in the late morning, and spend the night somewhere on the road.
I may go by Dallas this time, I think.
Cheers...
