Nov. 6th, 2002 04:53 pmI didn't realize it at the time, but the Atlanta airport was socked in with weather yesterday. As it was, I experienced no delays getting in, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
The drive to the Durango airport was uneventful, unless you count the phone call I received while hauling my luggage out of the van. It was a client, wondering if I was free to take an 85-page assignment. I had to say no, I was on my way to Atlanta. The caller wished me a good conference and said he'd check if the deadline could be extended.
Marvin S., who lives in Pagosa and is one the store's clients, was on the plane up to Denver, though we didn't actually run into each other until we deplaned. We shared a meal at a little out-of-the way place with the unlikely name of Itza Wrap! Itza Bowl! We both opted for a vegetarian sandwich, and the place gets its name, apparently, from the fact that the sandwiches are wrapped in oversize flat bread, or you can order bowls of food over rice and noodles. Don't ask why, but the concept reminded me of the street-level eateries in Blade Runner, albeit without the rain and lack of walls.
The hotel I stayed in last night wasn't bad, but it wasn't near the conference, either. I checked out at around 8:15 am and spent about half an hour waiting for a taxi to pass by. Unlike, say, New York, the streets are not wall-to-wall taxi cabs down here.
I got to the Hyatt around 9 and soon was in the car with Jim W. and a few others, on our way up to Jim's neck of the woods (literally). Right now, we're back, and it only took me 20 minutes to figure out that the folks at Slingshot (who sold me a 300-minutes-of-connection-time account) are in receivership. Fortunately, I did not cancel my NetZero account, but it costs me each time I call, so I better keep this post short.
In any event, the opening reception is in about an hour.
