I didn't sleep well last night. In fact, I had sort of a nightmare where these two fellows burst through a door and put guns to my head and forced me to sign something. Maybe it's this rarefied air up here on the 17th floor of the Hyatt.

After attending the opening session this morning, I retired to my room to do a little more work on my presentation (actually, I had intended it to be a partial rehearsal). After lunch, during which I attached myself to a German group that was going across the street to a Chinese place, the Slavic Languages Division had its annual meeting, after which Larissa K. and Steve S. spearheaded an interesting session on translation disguised as a game show.

You had to be there.

I went back to the Chinese place for dinner, sat at the sushi bar (staffed by a young Vietnamese man), and seriously underestimated the bill. After dinner, I returned to the hotel and attended a networking session, which was fairly good, followed by something called a "Book Splash," featuring the work of translators that had been published commercially, followed by an ATA conference tradition, the Literary Café.

The latter event gives translators the opportunity to share their literary translations with others. Although I never attended any "readings" before last year, I always sort of felt that the audience should show their appreciation by snapping their fingers, à la The Beat Generation in The Village.

This year, I regaled the crowd with my rendering of Ваше благородие (which I'd translated and included in my LJ sometime last February). It went over well.

It is late and it's been an active day. More tomorrow, if I find the time.

Cheers...
