When will I learn?
Dec. 1st, 2002 09:14 pmIt seems a better than even bet that, whenever I spell-check a post using LJ's online "Update Journal" page, I will lose the post when I hit that ultimate "Submit" key (or whatever it's called... I'm using LogJam right now). That just happened to me, and I forgot to copy the text to my local Clipboard before tagging that button.
In retrospect, it was a boring post anyway, but it's still annoying to have lost it.
Drew went home relatively early from yesterday's dinner. Huntur had a great time, I think, but eventually started feeling sleepy, but not sleepy enough to actually nod off, so Drew gathered her together and went home. Too, he has company visiting (Shannon stayed with them), and I know all too well what it feels like to have to keep several family plates spinning at the same time.
Mike and Karen, on the other hand, stayed until about 9 pm. We all (them, Galina, Lee, and I) had some good conversation, and Mike regaled us all with verses from Ogden Nash. I was in bed by about 9:30, with the alarm set for 3 am. When I got up, I noted that there was some fog out, but failed to notice that about a half inch of snow had fallen in the intervening hours. If I had noticed it, I would have been more energetic about getting people up and about.
As it was, we left around 4:20 and crept down Highway 84 to Chama, New Mexico because of the snow. After Chama, the road seemed to clear up so we resumed our normal driving habits (no snickering from the peanut gallery, please), and pulled up at the Albuquerque Sunport at 8:10 am, in plenty of time for Lee to catch her flight back to Houston. Among the noteworthy sites during the trip was the waning moon that floated very close (about two moon diameters) above Jupiter in the eastern sky near dawn.
On the way home, I got off of I-25 at Cerrillos Road as we approached Santa Fe, in order to cut a corner and drive past the Sam's Club there. Little did I realize I was about to drive past a "target of opportunity" in the form of an outlet mall. We spent the better part of 2 hours there, mostly looking around. I was not impressed, and spent most of my time sitting on the benches outside of shops while Galina did her thing inside.
Perhaps the best "deal" I saw in the shops I did enter was at the Seiko outlet, where a $600 watch had been discounted to $99, but I wasn't sure the item was worth the discounted price, and anyway, I don't need a watch.
I was put off by most of the signs, which lustily proclaimed "70% OFF!" and then added "of suggested retail prices" in small letters below, the way MAD magazine often parodies various signs. I did not get the feeling that the prices were anything to go out of one's way for. (Certainly the "food court" was not... two coffees and two "microwave-em-yourself" breakfast burritos cost us nearly $13!)
We eventually did make it to Sam's, where we spent an unconscionable amount of money. Afterward, Galina wanted me to stop by a PetSmart next door to the Sam's, but when I pulled into the parking lot, that put us within eyeshot of one of Galina's favorite stores: one of a chain of craft stores called Michaels. That killed another couple of hours.
Anyway, by the time we got home, it was dark again. We're both tired, and I'm on the verge of dropping off to sleep. More fun and games tomorrow.
Cheers...
