Lee is playing some games that she's reviewing for publication. I'm not facing the screen, but some of the sound effects remind me of the original Doom game, which was about the time I stopped playing computer games.

Lee and I stayed up until about 1:30 last night/this morning, talking about marketing and other things. I was trying to relate all my old Borland experience selling software to her new job selling anime, as I see a lot of parallels, particluarly in the marketing end of the business. I hope some of it sunk in. (She did take notes.)

I arrived at my assigned work place this morning to find the room empty. After 15 minutes, I started to get a little nervous - maybe I'd been told to report to the wrong room (I've seen it happen before) - and called the office. The people I was to work with today filed in while I was on the phone.

The work regime for the day happened to be fairly easy. My job is to translate and interpret for Russian specialists involved in training and the development of simulations. As such, they are closely linked to (indeed, some come from the ranks of) the flight controllers.

While out and about (getting coffee, etc.), it was interesting to run across people I'd known back when I was present daily on site (it occurs to me that it has now been more than two years since I left my former employer... how time flies). Some recognized me immediately and called me by name; others seemed to make believe they didn't see me, and avoided meeting my gaze.

The highlight of the day was losing my badge, which is attached to a lanyard equipped with a breakaway device that's supposed to literally save my neck by coming apart in case a one-eyed, one-horned, flying purple people eater (remember those) grabs my badge and starts dragging me back to its lair, or something. Unfortunately, the device came apart with no apparent provocation, and I spent a pretty nasty several minutes retracing my steps to look for it, to no avail.

Fortunately, the security people at JSC now do such a thorough job of vetting everyone at the gate that they no longer wander around the site checking to make sure everyone is badged. I called the security office to see if anyone had turned in my badge, with no joy. A couple of hours later, someone stopped by the room while I was having a quick late lunch and returned my badge.

The breakaway device is now securely super-glued; I'll take my chances with the people eater and other hazards of his ilk.

After work, I drove over to the area around the Beltway and Highway 59, near Sugar Land, to pick Natalie up from work. While there, she gave me the nickel tour of the place, which looks interesting. By the time we got back and I cooked dinner (sliced pork tenderloin, udon noodles, snap peas, bean sprouts, and straw mushrooms in a soup), it was really too late to go out and do anything, so she settled down to her games and I did a little vegetating.

Time to go to bed. More of the same tomorrow.

Cheers...
