Retrieval...
May. 4th, 2003 10:25 pmIt was a long, but fast day. Long, in that any day in which one drives to and from Denver to Pagosa Springs is long, and fast, in that we made good time in each direction.
Shannon, Huntur, and I left pretty much per our plan, stopping only to fill up the tank on the way out of town, headed east on Highway 160. The wind that had blown all night had deposited a thin film of white stuff on the ground, which became more evident as we ascended the Wolf Creek Pass. Soon after we rose above the bottom of the clouds, the world turned snowy and the road became slushy.
We made a slight detour to Salida for breakfast, and I indulged a whim to look for a diner dedicated to UFOs, the owner of which had been featured on some television show because he had experienced a life-changing "encounter" with a UFO in the San Luis valley. I didn't see any place that might have looked like the place depicted on the tube, so we ended up gobbling breakfast at MacDonald's.
We got to the Denver Airport in good time and had a sandwich and "smoothee" for lunch. The drinks were more "icee" than "smoothee," and mine froze my throat as it went down. I went off and made use of an AT&T internet terminal to see (a) how easy it was to use, and (b) to check on some stuff I'd forgotten to check before leaving the house. If you know what you're trying to accomplish, the 4 minutes you buy for a buck is enough time. If you just want to browse, the kiosk offers a number of free sites, such as the National Science Foundataion.
Drew arrived pretty much on time, and we immediately set off for home. The weather over the mountains as we drove south on 285 was spectacular, as clouds described fantastic shapes, almost like water hitting a rocky beach in slow, slow motion. At one point, as we drove south toward Monte Vista, I spied a long, cylindrical cloud in front of us that was most unusual; its shape made me think of a rolling pin.
Dinner was salad and a couple of beers, as I was too lazy to cook upon returning home. I spent the last couple of hours watching Murder By Numbers, and I thought it was pretty well made. It reminded me a bit of the story of Leopold and Loeb, a couple of college boys who murdered someone for generally the same reasons and the two young men in the film. Sandra Bullock's character was somewhat of an enigma all throughout the film, but that was okay.
And that was how I spent my day off. Tomorrow, I must start on a new job and invoice the item sent yesterday. After further thought during today's drive up to Denver, I concluded that the reason the job took so much time was the cruddy quality of the original. Had the original deadline held, I probably would have made it, but with many more illegible sections noted. The client for that job has responded with satisfaction and queries regarding my availability for future work. I'll have to sleep on that.
Cheers...
