This morning, I reviewed and sent the completed file from yesterday and went to the store. Upon returning a little after noon, I was chagrined to find one of those "it's undelivered, but we'll keep trying" messages, so I sent it again and called the client. They had not received my first message, though something did arrive about an hour after I sent the second.

The client's work authorization arrived late yesterday (which it shouldn't have, having been sent earlier in the day), so I had no way of knowing that one of the two documents assigned was due about 10 minutes after I started working on it. Fortunately, it was an easy translation, and I delivered it about 90 minutes later than the original deadline.

I've just finished the last item using Déjà Vu X, but there seems to be some kind of difficulty reconstituting the tabular form of the original document. Microsoft Word crashed when I tried to fix the problem (yes, I know, what a surprise!), and in such a way as to not allow me to delete the rotten file, as the OS thinks it's still in use (yes, I know, yet another surprise!).

That's pretty much been my day, except for leaving a copy of Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms in the store with a big "FREE BOOK! LOOK INSIDE!" note rubber-banded to it. I suspect the book will probably remain in place for some time unless I create a separate shelf or other device for it. (The marketing guy in me is thinking how this might be Yet Another Way to increase traffic to the store... people who stop by to see what books have been released "in the wild" might throw some additional business our way.)

The VAIO has rebooted and DVX has just recreated the same fubared file. Farblegarg.

Cheers...

Well, I found out what the malfunction was with the translated file. The bottom line is this: one should not muck around with the tags that DVX intersperses in the discombobulated text. (I thought I had a good handle on the subject; apparently I was wrong.) The job is sent, and I have spent a delicious several minutes compiling an invoice for the past few days. It's a reasonably nice payday, too, especially considering how - in the rush-rush-rush of incoming and outgoing files - I managed to almost lose track of one of the assignments.

Almost. :^)

It's nearly a quarter after 8 and it occurs to me that Galina is still not home. I'm calling the store as I type this, but there does not seem to be an answer. Hmmm. Now trying Drew's number...

Not there, either.

I'm going driving.

I went to the store, no Galina. Called Drew again and asked if Ulla N. had stopped by the store in the afternoon (because I seem to recall Galina had mentioned something about lunch... and I was grasping at straws); he said yes, she had stopped by.

I then made the rounds of the eateries on this side of town (I don't think my Nissan would make it downtown and back... I really need to get the clutch fixed); no joy.

Galina came back a few minutes ago. Yes, she'd been dining with Ulla, at her house.

Consider me relieved.

Cheers...
