Over before you know it...
Jul. 11th, 2004 09:09 pmSomehow, today managed to pass by in a slow-motion blur. On the one hand, I didn't get a whole lot done, on the other, I was pretty active.
Drew came over in the morning to help us move the furniture from the dining/living rooms and then pick up and throw out the carpet, which had been overly "blessed" by our pets while Galina had been in Houston and I overseas, the final straw after several years of periodic abuse. The next step as far as that floor is concerned will be to dispose of the padding and the nail strips, after which we'll wash and treat the underlying floorboards. Eventually, I'd like to see some kind of hardwood floor laid down in place of the carpet.
I spent some time in the afternoon getting rid of more papers. The papers are easy; the books are going to be hard. Intellectually, I understand that if I haven't touched a book for, say, five years (except possibly to move it from one place to another), then it's likely I'll not touch it ever again. Emotionally, however, there is that little voice that says "But you never know when you might need it!" or "You'll get around to reading it, someday!" that I find just oh, so hard to deal with.
Around sixish, we noticed that our water had stopped flowing. Just to make sure this wasn't some kind of bad joke, I went down to our meter and made sure the ground around it was undisturbed. Apparently, whatever the problem was, it was not local to our water line. Drew called a few minutes later to report that there was some kind of problem out in our direction, and that crews from the water department were on the job.
Fortunately, we'd planned on having dinner out anyway, so we joined Drew, Shannon, and Huntüer at Ramone's, where we had some fairly good food. Upon returning home, it was apparent that the water was still not flowing, which is disturbing, if for no other reason than the lack of fire protection for as long as the water stays off (which is approaching 4 hours as I write this). Yeah, I know. I'm spoiled.
Cheers...
