I mentioned my half-witted idea to Galina this morning before I left for The Office, and she replied that she'd been thinking much along the same lines. During the day, I convinced myself that we'd end up egging each other on and actually leaving for a grueling 38-hours of driving during this upcoming 72-hour weekend. That wouldn't leave a lot of time for much else.

Besides missing Pagosa, I was inspired by a book I once read, titled God is My Co-Pilot, about a pilot for Gen. Claire Chennault's "Flying Tigers," which carried the battle to the Japanese in the late 30s on behalf of the Chinese Air Force. Among that pilot's memoirs was that of driving some inordinate number of miles -- every weekend, if memory serves -- to spend just a few hours with his fianceé.

However, besides having barely enough time on the Colorado end to say hi, grab a bite, and catch some winks, the perspectives on the translation front helped put the kibosh on the trip. I had been considering working in the car, but I'm not sure that would work out so well, what with having to deal with balancing the laptop literally on my lap, viewing the screen (LCDs provide notoriously poor visibility if the sun is shining), and the inability to use any reference materials.

So, we'll probably figure out something to do around here over the weekend; Galina was saying something about gravel and the driveway.

We watched Cold Mountain this evening. It was a fine film, with interesting themes. The "home guard" reminded me mightily of descriptions I'd read of the KGB in action.

Speaking of which, emotions were running pretty high at The Office, which had been following the situation in Russia pretty closely. Some of the remarks made by the guys even managed to violate the unspoken but ironclad rule of etiquette which calls for a strict ban on the use of inappropriate language (i.e., phrases that would make stevedores blanch) in the presence of women. Sexist? Maybe, but that's the way it is. And the fact that people lost their composure to the extent that such a rule was violated was quite telling.

In any event, I managed to finish editing the giant document (300 pages), which made me feel good about reaching some kind of closure for the week.

Cheers...
