I was nearing the end of my rope...
Mar. 15th, 2005 08:36 pm... but a phone call a few hours ago lifted my spirits.
Winter hurled a wet spitball at us here in the Four Corners, in the form of a light overnight dusting of snow and morning temperatures around 17°F (-8°C). I didn't turn the heat on in the bedroom last night, so it made for one of those mornings where you run around for the sake of movement, trying to get and stay warm for the first 10 minutes or so of the day.
The new client with the requirement to use the Trados translation memory product marks several firsts. This is the first client I've gotten through the ProZ.com site, after four years of "platinum" membership. This is also the first client where I am not the primary translator on the project, but have usurped the role of proofreader, Trados operator, and interface with the client. Earlier in the afternoon, I got back the first installment of the product from the translator, and the work is excellent, as I knew it would be. (Even better, the Trados WinAlign tool likes it, too! Slick!)
Speaking of new clients, that phone call I mentioned at the top of the post made me consciously aware that my name and qualifications are being submitted by at least three (maybe four) companies bidding on a fairly sizeable job that's to be awarded across the border in New Mexico (so I may end up with work no matter which bidder wins). It also made me aware that my invoice for the Kazakhstan gig is about to be paid (which is a good thing, because I'm starting to get checks for the small jobs I belted out after arriving home from Baikonur and submitting my invoice).
In a completely unrelated development, looking up "подкаст" in Google (a transliteration of "podcast") surprisingly does not turn up any Russian podcasts, but plenty of information on "subcastes" (referring to the Indian caste system).
Alles ist in ordnung.
I looked up the transliteration after "podcast site:.ru" didn't turn up much of interest. (I didn't find any "native" podcasts, что мне кажется любопытно. Возникает таким образом, ребята, следующий вопрос: почему все молчат?)
In any event, I've been listening (repetitively, in fact) to podcasts in French put together by one Bertrand Lenotre, trying to gin up my comprehension and absorb some phraseology.
I've also been tossing around ideas inside my head for some kind of regular podcast of my own that might be used as a promotional vehicle for my translation work. So far, I'm of the opinion that whatever it is I do - and I'm leaning toward a theme of "common but 'hard' Russian words and how to best render them in English translation" - the spots are going to have to be short and punchy. I base this last on (a) the generic KISS principle ("keep it short and simple"), as well as (b) not having a lot of time to devote to this, certainly not on an ongoing basis, and (c) having noted that an overwhelming proportion of podcasts being posted on, for example, OpenPodcast.org are - besides being mostly content-free - long-winded to boot. (This idea of professional promotion hints at the idea of a general overhaul of the professional web site, but I think that will continue to be a point on the horizon for the foreseeable future, as will the podcasting idea.)
After dinner, I spent some time chasing paper, and sending out LinkedIn invitations to connect. They say you need to repeat an action for 21 days for it to become a habit... hmmm?
In fact, I continue to haul about a bag of garbage out of the house daily, and am heating the basement with discarded documents and paperwork. The design of the stove, however, is tremendously inefficient - it tends to suck warm air out of the heated area and send it up the flue - so it's still cold.
