A good thing I was trying...
Jun. 1st, 2005 08:13 pmI tried to get out of the store as early as possible so as to put some additional time into the paper chase (one major goal of two was accomplished over the two off days; I need to check over the figures for that, complete the second goal, and address two other items that were added to my plate). It was a good thing I was trying to get out of the store, as I finally accomplished the task after putting in a 5-hour workday.
All Marines are aware of the dictum "the Word was in the beginning..., and then the Word was changed." The truth of these words struck home today starting with a phone call from the client (or, rather, the client's assistant) telling me that the Kazakhstan gig was to start June 2 (i.e., tomorrow), and that I should get my ticket soon.
A snippet from Das Boot (the one in which an officer is yelling Alarm!... Alarm! and the crew is diving through hatchways to the front of the boat to hasten its dive) momentarily flashed before my eyes and I tried to gently correct what I'd heard: "I'm sorry, I thought I heard you say 'June.' The campaign starts in July, right?"
No, June, came the reply, though to be sure it was suggested that perhaps I ought to call the end client.
I did, and in the course of that conversation I was informed that instead of leaving on July 2, I am now to leave on... hmmm... maybe I oughta keep my trap shut, at least for now? (I find myself getting superstitious as I get older... did I jinx the July 2 departure by focusing too much energy on it? Logic and rationality say "no"; my gut says "Keep your trap shut until later!") To close the thought with minimum rippling of the thread of the cosmos, let me simply say that I am now to leave... after July 2.
Mais qui sait? Peut-être ça va changer encore une fois? Ou plusieurs fois?
* * * I was scanning emails and making a fast swipe at my favorite sites while chatting with folks associated with the gig and ran across something called Backpack, which turned out to be intuitively simple for me to use, as it exhibits some strong Wiki influence (in the markup and the ability to create new pages).
What you don't get is all the overhead of a Wiki (light in implementations such as WackoWiki, heavy in implementations such as TWiki), as well as some pretty interesting features, such as the ability to set reminders that are delivered by email or SMS, for specific (at 7:30 am) or relative times (in 15 minutes). There's even the capability of sharing your pages with others (though your correspondents must establish accounts with the service, the cost of which is free when signing up for the bottom tier plan), or to make any given page world-readable.
Enough about that and about the July gig. I need to review the day and recharge.
Cheers...
