The closing papers finally arrived for me to sign and they confused the heck out of me. Something about engaging some company to act as an intermediary for us as "exchangers" (and for which they plan to charge $750), which I know nothing about, so I didn't return the papers (as everyone was expecting). Life is tough, but I'm getting tired of walking around with my wallet open to the world in general.

After a few days at the store, I start to become acutely aware of some of the utter cluelessness some clients suffer from. Case in point: a client who insisted on sending a small envelope via Certified Mail with a return receipt, even after I suggested repackaging the correspondence in a larger envelope. The suggestion was met with a coolness that implied I was trying to shamelessly rip off a respectable citizen, so as to retire on the proceeds from one legal sized envelope (7 cents, retail).

Well, it turns out that, first of all, the return receipt is actually bigger than the envelope the client insisted on using, so I trim the thing and Scotch-tape it to the back of the envelope. Next, since the client has already tried to be "helpful" by attaching a couple of stamps to the envelope, this means that the postage meter tape for the difference now extends over and actually covers most of the return address.

"But you're covering my return address!" panics the client.

"That's unfortunate," I agree, "but although the letter will get there without a return address, it won't if it lacks sufficient postage. Anyway, we still need to stick the certified bar code onto the envelope."

Yeah, I can be a passive-aggressive so-and-so when goaded.

With that, I affix the bar-coded certified mail label, which covers the rest of the return address. The client looks crestfallen at the result - a small rectangle where only the original address has not been covered by some kind of adhered device - and observes: "I should have put it in a larger envelope."

No kidding, Poirot.

Having related that tale, I conclude that doing so only dwells on the negative. I shall let it stand, but shall also try to avoid touching upon such moments in the future.

I got my first Backpack reminder today (I'd set one up for this morning), and the system works fine, except if you're in the middle of something when the reminded pops up. (Mine was to write a letter to my mom, a task that is now three days overdue.) When next I saw the reminder, in passing, it was two hours past the mail pickup and the UPS guy was commencing to breathe down our neck for the end-of-day printout.

My search to improve my French aural comprehension was rewarded with the discovery of the Radio France International site, on a page called Le journal en français facile. There, I can find the spoken and printed word in roughly the same place, which is not very common in my experience.

Anyway, it's time to go wind down. Maybe write that letter.

Cheers...
