Roundup!

Somewhere around the last third of one of the hazard reports I'm revising, I realized I was again in the position of working with an old version of the document that contains new revisions, so I ended up going through the earlier portion again after finishing the document, to make sure I hadn't missed anything, as normally, the check I do is fairly large grain (making sure salient numbers, etc. are in place among an appropriate number of appropriately sized paragraphs) as I concentrate on incorporating the highlighted revisions. That put a little extra stress in the morning, although I made the deadline easily enough.

I then translated a court ruling, learning along the way that, according to article 18 of the Azerbaijan law on the state language of that country, the proper name of a citizen of that country consists of the first name, father's name, and surname, with the word "ogli" or "gizi" following the father's name. Dig it!

I finally remembered to put the corned beef in the slow-cooker, so there was something to eat at the end of the day. Galina pronounced the dish (which she had sampled earlier) excessively salty, which caused me to raise my eyebrows to the limit as I set about cutting myself a portion, because normally I can barely eat anything that's she thinks is adequately salted. However, I had no problem with the corned beef, although there probably was more seasoning in it than I like to see in a meal.

NaNoWriMo day two passed with no untoward incident, as I completed the day's assignment and expanded my word lead to 53 words. Should I continue to outperform the daily quota at this rate, I'll be about 750 words ahead of myself by the end of the month. (I don't believe I'm taking this seriously!)

NoteStudio caused my Palm to hang yesterday, and I even remember when it happened, I wanted to reset the thing, but I got sidetracked and as a result, the device completely drained its battery, causing all data to be lost. I'm either going to have to start synching the Palm to prevent losing data (my last synch was sometime in September, according to the Palm desktop on my VAIO), not worry about losing data (my preferred alternative right now, as I'm not too worked up about it... maybe because I'm not keenly aware of what's gone), or stop using the device.

Speaking of Sony, I'm sure pretty much everyone and his sister has heard that the BMG division of the company is distributing CDs that will install clumsy and insecure anticopying software on any Windows computer in which the CD is placed. The software apparently modifies device drivers so that they execute routines stored in hidden directories that cannot be viewed using conventional Windows techniques. The software cannot be uninstalled, either, using conventional means. All of this was documented by one Mark Russinovich and has been well publicized.

It turns out one of the side-effects of the rootkit software installed by the Sony CD is that it opens a door that allows virus writers to hide malware on computers. Fortunately, Sony is taking steps to address the situation, albeit by attempting to fix the security problem (good luck, guys, given your software track record) instead of abandonding the technology.

I shall have to be very careful not to place any CD distributed by Sony in any of my computers, and to make doubly sure that my next laptop is anything but a VAIO.

Cheers...
