I got to my work place yesterday at the usual time, only to have Mike T. pop in a few minutes later. We were both surprised to see each other. For my part, I was thinking he was on the way out of the building (though I couldn't imagine why an interpreter would have been required on a Saturday), and didn't catch on when he asked me what the heck I was doing there.

"I just came in a few minutes ago to get ready for my shift," I said.

"Nope," he replied, "I've got it tonight. Check your work assignment."

I did, and it turns out that - had I looked a little closer at my work assignment - I was indeed not scheduled for last night's MSR work, Mike was.

Whisky. Tango. Foxtrot!?

I mean, there I was: I had finally managed to get a decent amount of sleep during the day (Saturday) and now I'm supposed to do... what? Go back to the room and... watch television? (No way would it be to sleep, as that would be the absolute, no-argument best way to really screw up my shifted sleep schedule.) And while I'm sure there are places in Houston that never close at night, I was not exactly in the mood to check them out.

So, at around 11 pm on Saturday night, I threw caution to the winds, picked up the phone, and called Natalie. I caught her in the middle of studying for her math final, and, seeing as how I can be of use in such situations - and the fact that I'm her old man and on the cusp of my next birthday which we had agreed to celebrate today anyway - I was invited over.

I managed to stay up until almost 4 am and got a solid 6 hours of sleep. Natalie took me out for Sunday brunch at a place over in Montrose called "Baba Yega," which is a strange name for a restaurant as it is the name of the Mark-One cultural prototype of the Russian bogeywoman (she is said to live in the forest in a cottage erected on chicken's feet).

Strange as the name may be, the layout of the place is very casual and we managed to get a seat in the gazebo in the back yard, overlooking a pleasant water feature. We shared a carafe of mimosas with breakfast, which was quite good, though despite my best intentions, I still managed to overeat.

Afterwards, we went off in the direction of the local Hong Kong Market (a mall, really), mostly to just look around (though I was not going to complain if I happened to find the kind of tea I had at Hitomi's the other day).

I'm getting ready to leave and go directly to work (though come to think of it, it might make sense to stop by the room and drag a razor across my face, at a minimum). I napped very lightly somewhere during the day, which I am not sure will be enough to get me through the night, but if my sleep cycle did get perturbed last night, at least I don't have to shift back too much to unperturb it.

Cheers...
