A pleasant day...
Dec. 25th, 2005 06:59 pm...even if I did sleep through most of it. I'm still way short of 100% in terms of feeling healthy and have had this urge to sleep nearly all day. Fortunately, I've been able to indulge that urge all day.
By mutual arrangement, I got Natalie the Firefly boxed set for Christmas, with the understanding that I could watch it before handing it over on Christmas. I watched the last episode last night, while Natalie was visiting Drew, and had the set re-boxed and wrapped for this morning.
I remember watching the first couple of episodes as they aired, but never became enough of a fan to make sure I caught each new episode. Afterwards, for some reason, I started to confuse Firefly with Farscape, and it only took one or two episodes of the latter to satiate my curiosity.
Now, after having watched the series, I guess I can count myself a fan, but I can also see - though not describe too well - what it is about the show that would prevent it from being an all-out blockbuster. I plan to think about this some more to see if I can give voice to that inner critic.
This year's theme for presents for Huntür was dancing (except, of course, for my present, which had the usual educational bent). There was a ballerina-out-of-the-box kit, with a little floor mat showing foot positions, a plastic support bar for the tricker moves, I would imagine, and a fairly entertaining DVD to demonstrate the moves.
Then there was a more pedestrian game where the point is to jump around and pound the liver out of a pressure-sensitive floor pad, with instructions on where and when to step provided by the unit's main box.
Huntür seemed to have a lot of fun with her new toys, even if she didn't quite step along with the music, so to speak. She'll have plenty of time, though, to improve her skills, I am sure.
In other news, I note that one channel (AMC?) seems to be playing Jean Shepherd's A Christmas Story very nearly continuously, SpikeTV is broadcasting "008 days of 007," the SciFi channel is broadcasting some kind of horror marathon (idiots), and some other channel is putting out an endless series of John Wayne films. I guess a lot of people in the program scheduling end of the business must've decided to go on vacation during Christmas.
I am almost afraid that this is some kind of portent of our future, which will become only bleaker once the media business puts a lock on what we may see, the times at which we may see it, and the à-la-carte price we'll pay to do so, but I'm allowing politics to meander into this post, which is a sleazy thing to do on Christmas (almost as sleazy as showing horror flicks, but there I go again...).
I hope everyone reading this had a great day.
Cheers...
