It was a good thing I left last night's interpreter party early, as it gave me an opportunity to do a little work before going to bed. You see, I've picked up a fairly large "outside" assignment with a fairly, um, ambitious deadline, so every spare minute pretty much has to be spent translating.

It was also a good thing I decided to get up early, at 5 am, to start working on the text, because at a little after 7, the lights went out. A call to the front desk revealed that the lights were expected to remain out for a while, due to a traffic accident somewhere along the road that runs in front of the hotel. Indeed, the lights didn't go back on until shortly before we left for work at 10 am. I was gratified to find out, under fire (so to speak), that if I turn the brightness way down, my laptop's battery - which was at about 66% or so charge when the power was cut - was able to keep me translating until a little after 8:30 or so. (Yes, some might be appalled, but this battery is 2.5 years old! At any rate, don't disabuse me of my current admiration for my VAIO; opportunities to be so enthusiastic are rare!)

Someday, when I have more time, I need to explain the complexities of herding nearly 50 delegation members in two large buses. Between the difficulties inherent in such an enterprise, the day got off to a slow start when the dancers at a local Native American cultural center didn't start their dancing exhibition until roughly the time we were scheduled to leave. As the day progressed, to the White Sands Missile Range and the White Sands National Monument, we fell further behind. Impressions of those places (and perhaps photos) may come later.

We stopped for "dinner" in Alamagordo, where there was time enough for those with quick reflexes to run next door and pick up some groceries at Wal-Mart.

We got back at 9:34, making for a nearly 12 hour day.

I didn't work yesterday very much, owing mostly to the interpreter's get-together. I made all that up this morning, along with part of today, but I still have about 1200 words or so to catch up. If I can do 2000 source words a day, I'll probably make the deadline (if there are actually only 10000 source words in the assignment). I will sleep on whether to drop a precautionary note to my project manager.

Off to do a little work, as I did catch a zee or two in the van coming back.

Cheers...

UPDATE: It's around 11:15 pm, and I've caught up, page-wise, with where I need to be. However, meeting my deadlines (including a 50% submission tomorrow night, or Tuesday morning, if I get up early to work) will still not be a piece of cake. However, as I said, I'll sleep on it.
