Back home!

Be it ever so humble, etc.

The road home was smooth, made smoother by Carl Hiaasen's Skinny Dip.

I started the day by doing a short item, some apostils, and sending them off. I then read another slug of James Ellroy's White Jazz, which had been gathering dust in the basement for a while. When I say a "slug" of Ellroy, that's exactly what I mean: the man has a way of writing stuff that saps you squarely between the running lights. The world he writes about is so perverse and distorted, it's as if what's going on is taking place on a planet far away.

I overstepped my reading time by 15 minutes, which would normally be no big deal, except that it cut into my packing time. Employing the time-honored technique of withdrawing all of my stuff from various parts of the room to the kitchen countertop, I started to pack my stuff, which had grown in mass mostly as a result of the farewell gifts bestowed upon me (among others) at the end of the meeting. As it turned out, my roll-on (which I check in) ended up being 4 pounds overweight, but United let me slide.

Once on the plane, everything went pretty smoothly. My layover in Denver was only 30 minutes, and Drew was pretty much on time picking me up.

Somewhere along the way, I recalled I had neglected to renew the registration for our LLC and to file in the quarterly unemployment insurance return for the store, both due by the end of April. Upon returning home, I was able to take care of the first item without a problem (Colorado is big on electronic filing), but I could only file the UI form, not actually pay the fee, so I'm likely going to be liable for a late fee there. On the one hand, the failure to take care of these items is not so good; on the other, taking care of two out of three (the state sales tax return last week is the third item) is better than zero.

Galina is in Houston, taking care of our investments down there, so coming home means returning to an empty house, and I am, frankly, a bit depressed over that.

Tomorrow morning, I have a radiogram to take care of, followed by a carload of paperwork to catch up on (invoices, etc.). Drew tells me that Brady has finally quit, so I'll probably start spending more time at the store. After helping out with a feasibility study during the just-completed job, it should be a cinch.

I have so much to write about, but only so much time and even less patience.

Cheers...
