Getting ready to do it again...
Aug. 25th, 2007 05:31 amShiloh and I covered over 650 miles yesterday.
During the last couple of hours of the trip, I kept struggling with the idea of making it an 850-mile day or not, thus keeping my options open to make the trek in two days, though having gone to the trouble of covering 850 miles one day, I'd pretty much be obligated to do it again the next. So, I gritted my teeth and tried to find the Motel 6 in Tuscaloosa, but missed it, and ended up at the Motel 6 in Bessemer, Alabama, a few miles short of Birmingham.
It has been some years since I've driven in Louisiana, but it seems the interstate is now one long billboard for the gaming industry. Here and there are small ads, positioned at the bottoms of various billboards and strongly reminiscent of those unobstrusive, one-line tobacco warnings on cigarette packs, to the effect of "if you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call..." which detracts somewhat from the intended effect of the main pitch (e.g., "To win, you gotta play!"), but that's probably just me.
I noticed as well that there are no interstate rest stops in Louisiana as there are in most other states I've driven in. In fact, there seemed to be one that I drove past that had been deliberately made inaccessible with concrete barriers (maybe it was a former truck weighing station, but the placement is wrong).
I took the following shot over my shoulder without taking my eyes off the road while driving along in Alabama:

All for now. Gotta head back out onto the road.
Cheers...
