I don't know where I got the impression that today might be a "light duty" day; I've been going full throttle all day long.

Of the 8960 words in the assignment due Wednesday, I've committed translations of all but 2850 to phosphor. It wasn't hard; just time consuming.

To avoid the kind of situation I found myself in yesterday (no progress for nearly 12 hours due to running around), I made sure I had 4600 words - or just a little more than half the job - under my belt before leaving for Manhasset to visit the old man. When I got to the hospital, the parking garage was still under repair, but the valet parking service... well, it wasn't available at all (because it's, like, a holiday, y'know?). So rather than go park somewhere at the other end of the world and attempt to find a shuttle bus to bring me back to where I was standing, I decided to risk it all and park my car next to a bunch of others in a space labeled "Valet Parking Only" and went up to see my dad for a few minutes. I half-figured that maybe the Texas plates would confuse them for just long enough for me to pop up to see the old man and back before the heap got towed.

I don't know whether it's the lighting at the time of day or the viewing angle, or maybe some combination of factors, but today, lying in his hospital bed, my dad looked quite cadaverous. Food arrived while I was there, and he wasn't even interested in seeing what was on the menu. I suspect he was medicated to the eyeballs. The nurse I spoke with said the staff'd keep an eye on him, but the tenor of her voice did not inspire confidence in me. Hopefully, he'll be better tomorrow, and maybe someone among the heavy-hitting staff of doctors will show up for work, well-refreshed from a long, langorous holiday weekend.

Sorry, I don't mean to be snippy.

Before I go to sleep tonight, I'll need to check the item due in Houston tomorrow at 8 am. (Then again, given Shiloh's habit of waking me at 5 am Eastern, I could probably put that part of the job off until tomorrow, and probably will.)

Cheers...
