Today, I received over 50 faxed pages, which is about what I normally receive - junk faxes included - over the course of a month or two. There's a pile of stuff to review and act upon - mostly having to do with the estate - before I leave for my gig in Kazakhstan.

Apropos of which, I find it mildly amusing that a number of people mistakenly assume, upon hearing that I'm headed for <mumblety>stan (what they hear), that I'm headed for a combat zone.

And although some of the morning status meetings have been known to be somewhat acrimonious - there comes to mind a meeting that took place on the day following an unseasonable summer rain shower, which resulted in finding out (the hard way) that the roof the facility leaked - a tour at Baikonur is otherwise pretty... routine, at least as far as the life of an interpreter is concerned.

However, depending on the situation, I am more than happy to allow perceptions to govern attitudes, if the end result works in my favor. In the end, I can change gears with the best of them, should push come to shove.

Aside from faxes, the inbox is curiously bereft of translation work, and while it is facile to attribute this absence to the operation of karma (after all, I kept telling clients to go fly a kite for the better part of the first 10 days of the month), there comes a time when one must grasp the bull by the tail, as the saying goes, and squarely face the situation. In my case, however, I'm not at all sure what purpose such resolute forbearance might serve, as I have little enough control over when clients decide to contact me.

I prefer, instead, to contemplate the bonding that Shiloh and I have experienced since Galina left for New York. The present situation falls short of the kind of relationship I would ultimately like to have with this canine, but on the other hand, Shiloh's just being around has made the loneliness of being here more bearable.

In technical news, I have determined - quite by happenstance - that although I can use Total Recorder to rip an audio file at 4 times normal speed (my preferred method of converting Audible books to mp3, cutting 6 hours of audio to 90 minutes), it is possible that the last 30 seconds or so of the file will be lost.

So, earlier, I spent about 15 mintues figuring out how to (a) tack on the last 30 to 40 seconds of the sound track, and then (b) highlight the duplicate section and delete it. It's a fairly straightforward procedure, but I fear I may have to perform it for most of the files that I've "ripped."

(As it turns out, I've only found 3 of about a dozen files that experienced this problem, so it's not that big a deal. Too, it's useful to have picked up some skills in this department.)

I really need to stop falling asleep late in the afternoon. I did so yesterday and couldn't fall asleep until after 1 am, and I fell asleep today, at around 7 pm, for about an hour... I guess you could call it a nap... still, it's nearly a quarter to midnight as I write this, and I don't feel tired at all.

Cheers...
