The "de-tacking" of the upstairs is complete, and I've loaded the Ford with most of the carpet that was removed, so we're in pretty good position for having folks come by and install new carpet. (I figure I'll slipstream the removed padding into the trash over the next couple of weeks.) The idea of replacing worn items still grates, as one ends up forever buying new stuff for other people (renters, new owners) to enjoy, but there's nothing to be done about that.

I downloaded Thunderbird 3.0 with the intention of seeing whether the previous version's crummy support for IMAP mail synchronization for offline access had been fixed, but decided instead of try something called The Bat!, which appears to sync with no trouble and has a "portable" version of the program available to boot. So far, I see no major downside to using the program, and the cost seems reasonable.

I've completed reading my first book of the year, Thomas Disch's adaptation of The Prisoner, which provided me a third view of the elephant (to join the views afforded by the original series and its recent remake). The book had a not-too-satisfying lack of closure for me, and while Disch positioned (and repositioned) the "friend" and "foe" mirrors with the skill of an operator dealing three-card monte, the end result of trying to keep track of the players was, generally speaking, a headache. The bottom line? Not an easy read, and I probably missed the point.

Galina and I have been scouring Netflix for "instantly watchable" movies, which doesn't necessarily mean the offerings are any good. We lucked out yesterday evening with Hopscotch, a nearly 30-year-old film starring Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson.

I think I'll go start reading another book.

Cheers...
