Playing catch-up...
Feb. 3rd, 2010 08:32 pmI've had my head seriously down trying to get a dent going in this rather esoteric, um, technical manual I've been assigned, with varying success. Between this new job, my second-half-of-January madness, and my latest long haul drive, I've missed a lot of what's been going on.
I have gone from being merely laconic to being downright taciturn, lately, especially as far as LJ is concerned (and LJ Idol in particular). I am flattered that LJ friends
joeymichaels and
thenodrin have pointed people at my tappings multiple times and appalled that I have not reciprocated, not because reciprocation is the right thing to do, but because these two contestants are among my "must reads" from week to week.
Apropos of LJ Idol, the package with Idol Musings arrived, and it certainly is a handsome-looking volume!
This current translation assignment is turning into a real time sink. The file showed up as a PDF where some of the pages look normal, while some others look like small postage stamps on a large black field (which probably explains why the file is a 250 MB in size). I've OCRed 80% of the pages, electing to leave the rest for later. Printing the thing - and I'm doing this in stages, too - offers its own challenges. I've had to go in with Acrobat and crop the strange-looking pages so they are readable on hard copy.
Another major factor affecting today's effort was getting set up. It was late by the time I got everything set back up the way I like it, so I've only translated about 1300 target words for the day. Assuming 6-day work weeks and 35,000 target words in the job (a lot of potential ass-of-u-and-me in that number until I get the whole job OCRed), I will have a daily nut of nearly 4,000 words from now to the 15th.
Good in one major respect; not-so-good in several others. Thus, it might behoove me to complete the OCR job tomorrow so I have a better number to play with.
Cheers...
