I managed to get everything pretty much off my plate yesterday, despite the fact that the one remaining file I had to translate—a PowerPoint file, wouldn't you know—caused PowerPoint 2010 to go completely bonkers and display a "This file is really screwed up" message box that persisted in coming back if you clicked OK. I finally managed to close the application by clicking on the window's "close" icon after dismissing that message box and before it could be displayed again.

I did a number of things to try to address the problem. The first involved opening the file on my old VAIO (which still has PowerPoint 2003 installed on it) and then saving it with a new name, but that didn't seem to do much, so I ended up translating the file on the VAIO.

Later, I tried opening the translation on my "main" machine, and while the file opened, I could not highlight text or do anything else. On a hunch, I logged into my machine as my "ghost" user and tried opening the file, and it opened without a problem. This suggested there was something wrong with my configuration, not with the software (at least, not outside the usual idiocy that PowerPoint brings to the table).

So I went back and opened PowerPoint as, um, my normal self and as best as I can figure, the problem may have something to do with the fact that I turned on the application's "Presentation Mode" while in Denver and didn't turn it back off.

Anyway, I spent way too much time on a project that shouldn't have taken anywhere near as long, but it's done, and sent, and—most important <grin>—invoiced!

Last night, Mike and I watched last year's "new" Star Trek film, and something said by the Christopher Pike character during his first meeting in the bar with Kirk grabbed me:
You know, your father was Captain of a Starship for 12 minutes. He saved eight hundred lives, including your mother's and yours. I dare you to do better.
I must confess, those last six words raised a small lump in my throat.

More work has arrived. Back to the face of the mine!

Cheers...
