Curious routing...
Feb. 16th, 2011 12:13 pmOn the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Galina's finding a really great deal for the two of us to spend a week in Paris, I went online to check out deals for airfare and the cheapest deal (from New York) turned out to be from Aeroflot.
What soured the deal somewhat was the fact that the flight included a connection—through Moscow—that kept us in airports and in the air (i.e., the system) for quite some time. The fare, however, was something like $450 round trip, which was pretty good, up until I clicked on the link to find out more.
It turns out that the "taxes and fees" tacked onto the fare would amount to over $250, bringing the overall cost of the ticket to within $100 or so of the next least expensive fare, via Icelandic Air, which also involves about an half-eternity less time spent in "the system."
For that trip twenty years ago, Galina found round trip tickets that included a week's lodging at a hotel about a mile outside of Paris (defined by me as past the last stop of the nearest Metro line) for some ridiculously low price (around $500, if memory serves). True, my seat back was broken during the flight east (requiring me to sit up for the entire trip, as the flight was 100% full) and a thick, oily liquid dripped steadily from overhead during the flight west (hydraulic fluid?), but we made it.
Interesting times.
Cheers...
