I'd say I've been "amusing" myself over the past couple of days by drinking a glass of water every time the combination of Wordfast and Word throw a hissy fit and make me wait while my file is "recovered," but I'd be lying. After a few of glasses, it gets old.

One thing I did notice, completely by accident today, was areas of text that defied selection, in the sense that, if I tried to select a word, I'd get the word and a bunch of other stuff. On a hunch, I pressed Alt+F9 to see if I had inadvertently selected a field. It turns out I had, and these fields were located in the craziest places, which is to say close to, but not at where you might expect to see a field. Some study of the "terrain" inside the file followed.

As best as I can tell, the original document had hyperlinks embedded for every reference to every table and equation. I'm about 40% of the way through the file and the equation count stands at 137, and very few of the paragraphs I've encountered so far in this document fail to reference an equation or a table. Or an equation in a table, perhaps multiple times.

This helps explain why memoQ kept stuffing tags into the structure of source text with the mad abandon of a ward-heeler stuffing ballot-boxes in Chicago.

So on a whim, I did a "select all" and then pressed Ctrl+Shift+F9 to delete all of the extra hyperlink information in the document. The saved result, which as far as I can see reads the same as it did before, is 1.4 MB smaller than the nearly 6 MB file I was working with previously. Meanwhile, Word has not experienced so much as a delayed screen refresh since.

Today's work, which has been largely new text, has gone by a lot better since the change, so even though I have fallen a bit short of my goal for the day (another item needs to be sent out), I feel pretty good overall about the project now.

Cheers...
