I went walking again this morning, and the thought crossed my mind, as I looked around me, that this is really not all that bad a place to live. I even got as far as allowing myself to think something along the lines of, "After all, remember all the good times you had here?"

As soon as the thought crossed my mind, the gears in my mind came to a screeching halt and I began to wonder, "Where did that wad of horse droppings come from?"

Good times? Here?

That I did a lot of growing up here, there's no doubt. But—good times?

Does learning how to skindive and spear fish count?

The not-so-good times come to mind rather freely, but they are all in the past, and there's absolutely no percentage in recalling them in any detail. The best that can be said is that I learned lessons from most of them.

But that didn't shake that feeling, this morning, that this is really not a bad place to live.

It's warmed up a bit since I've come back from Boston, and I'm noticing that mushrooms are still coming up, here and there. Among today's finds were some gilled mushrooms growing between the house and the dog run my dad and I built for Rex late in the spring following our move from Queens.

These mushrooms were growing from the ground and have a fresh, appetizing smell (which is nice but not indicative of edibility). The slight purplish tinge of the flesh is real. Right now, I've got two of the caps sitting on the glass of my scanner, where they will leave spore prints.

A few days ago, I mentioned finding some bright-yellow mushrooms by the side of the road. Since then, more have come up. This photo was taken with the flash and more closely approximates my recollection of the color than my previous image. I do not believe these are Sulfur Tufts, mostly because they're growing out of the ground (not out of wood).

The mail arrived too late for me to go to the bank and make any deposit. It's nice having a Wells Fargo around, even if it's a half dozen miles away.

Between yesterday and today, I've translated about 7,500 words. There are three small documents due tomorrow, after which the plate stands empty.

Galina reported that construction along I-70 headed east slowed her down considerably in her trek east. At last report, she was near Akron, Ohio, at the spot where I-71 leads into I-76. I expect she will spend the night at a motel, which will give her a relatively easy drive tomorrow along I-76 and I-80 the rest of the way here. I can't wait!

After 4 days, I've walked 77% of the 70,000 steps targeted by fitbit for a one-week period and continue to burn more calories than I consume (which is, ultimately, the only way to lose weight). I am noticing subtle changes in my behavior (not quite as lazy when it comes to moving around, not quite as generous with my portions).

I tried using my dad's rowing machine, but am afraid it may be a non-starter as an exercise. Walking is one thing; the scenery is always changing, as long as you're not walking back and forth inside a small room. But I've always had problems with repetitive, cyclical exercise (such as running around a track or swimming laps). I will endeavor to give it a real try, however, as it looks like it has the potential to exercise a number of muscle groups.

Cheers...
