Back in 1995 or so, I translated a USSR State Standard on Metallic and Nonmetallic Inorganic Platings and Coatings: Designations for my NASA client. I made sure to retain a copy of the translation, because the document contained every imaginable decipherable-only-in-your-dreams abbreviation for various kinds of platings and coatings, such as:
мт. Ан. Окс. эмт
which denotes an "anode oxide, produced on a matte surface in an electrolyte containing boric acid and chromic anhydride."

So now it's 2012, and as analysis is under way to make sure the ISS can keep flying past the original "expiration dates" of its components, and I find myself translating that standard's "big sister," which sets forth the selection criteria for said platings and coatings.

And if I didn't have my old copy to refer to (which is of pretty good quality despite its age and my level of professional skill at the time), I'd probably have to find myself a copy and translate it in order to be able to have a prayer of making sense of—and translating—the new document.

In other news, somewhere about the middle of last year, I began to deliver documents in zip file "packages." This had the effect of allowing me to have a uniform naming system for deliveries (which is really useful when it comes to looking for attachments in the outbox), and had the happy side-effect of creating an "as delivered" archive of files.

This came in handy a few minutes ago when I called up an old document to use as a template for a document that arrived this morning (you think what, our Memorial Day is celebrated in Russia?), to which I made suitable changes and then saved on top of the old file (I'm getting better at immediately renaming such reused files, but sometimes, my enthusiasm for getting down to keyboarding gets the better of me). Getting back on track (after renaming the file) was as simple as opening the archive and extracting the original sent file.

I'll probably not push the envelope too much today, but taking a good, hard look the stuff on my plate right now has opened my eyes. Vacation's pretty much over.

Cheers...
