The couple of times I looked yesterday, I didn't see much smoke rising from the Little Sand site, which indicates that (a) either the conflagration is not as intense as it was a couple of days ago, or (b) the smoke between here and there is making it hard to see the smoke rising from the site. The word, however, is that the fire is 20% contained (which is pretty good, considering the Forest Service is going to let this one pretty much burn out) and that its management will be handed over to a more 'routine' level tomorrow.
* * * The Russian word покрытие has been making itself a pest, lately, as I try to navigate this 75-page standard on coatings and platings, which is because both 'coating' and 'plating' are subsumed by the Russian word, although the two English words are far from synonymous.
A 'coating' is something like paint or varnish or some kind of plastic that adheres as a layer on top of whatever it is you're working with. A 'plating', on the other hand, involves the deposition of metal on metal, generally as a result of some chemical (or electrochemical) process. In English, you can't really speak of 'varnish plating' or 'silver coating', at least not if you want to minimize little alarm bells going off in the mind of a technically aware reader. So a few minutes ago, I turned to Google with a query to see if there's a generic English term that covers both coatings and platings, and came up with 'surface finishes' in several places.
I don't particularly care for 'surface finish', but it probably works better than 'plating' or 'coating' (especially where there's no clue in the Russian to distinguish which English meaning is referred to).
* * * I was fortunate enough to get through a sizeable chunk of work yesterday morning, after which I spent some time at the shelter, which made me feel a little guilty when I got back, so I basically shut down the computers and spent time watching another installment of Midsomer Murders with Galina.
The 'surface finish' item has 6,500 target words left, and I need to have that whittled down to less than 3,500 by the time I'm finished today.
So I better get to it.
