I took the time today to make a backup of my work machine, but instead of creating a VHD file, I used a piece of software I downloaded from WMWare (the name escapes me at the moment) to create a VMX file of my work machine's system disk. The process took about as long (although I think creating the VMX file was slightly faster) but the resulting file can be run as a virtual machine—more or less—under WMWare Workstation 9.

I'm not exactly sure I'd want to actually run such a virtual machine, per se (its size precludes storing it on the Acer's hard drive, which means it must stay on an external USB drive), but it sure would be a dandy way of recovering needed files in case my work machine goes belly up.

Cheers...
