So it turns out that if I visit a web site with a "self-signed" SSL certificate, my Kaspersy keep-me-safe-no-matter-what software so informs me (presumably, because such a situation poses a security risk) and prompts me to either disconnect or continue. As a curious side effect, so long as I am connected to said site, my mouse will not work while in Word.
I found this out in the course of editing a document, after uttering quite a bit of colorful language, manually saving my work, rebooting my computer, and then—after my mouse continued to refuse to work—uttering more colorful language and replacing the battery in my wireless mouse, which didn't solve the problem, either.
Disconnecting from the web site apparently did the trick (the mouse works again), but now—farblegarg!—none of my Autohotkey macros work.
Sigh.
Well, at least I hit the ground running this morning. That's gotta count for something.
UPDATE of 9:17 am: There may be something to my reasoning as set forth above, or I may be engaging in some mighty fine post hoc reasoning, at least as far as Word is concerned. It turns out that only part of my mouse's functionality was restored when I disconnected from the self-identified web site. Unchecking all Word add-ins appears to have restored full mouse functionality. Autohotkey remains useless, for now.
I don't have time for this....
UPDATE of 10:25: After a little while, the problem returns. Then something burbles in the back of my mind and I decide to restart Synergy (the utility that lets me move my mouse—and consequently, my keyboard and clipboard contents—to another computer and back), and things look like they're working (including Autohotkey).
Well, let me see how long this state of affairs lasts...
