"Funny," in the sense of something that does not work the way you expect.

Among the cool features that emacs org mode provides is the ability to use gnupg to encrypt parts of text files. Yesterday, while attempting to decrypt one such part, emacs threw an error.

I assumed, at the time, that this was the same error that raised its goofy-grinned head on my Windows 8.x system from time to time, albeit with no actual output of an error message (the text of which I failed to write down, but it really doesn't matter, as I've solved the problem).

First of all, whatever that problem was, it was not being duplicated here. What was happening was a lot simpler, though somewhat more perplexing.

I keep my gnupgp executable on an SD card that's more or less permanently installed on my main machine. Up until today, I've used a nifty utility called USBDLM to specify letter names for my various drives, including the SD card, which was assigned the letter J. Today, after the errors occurred trying to invoke gnupg from J, I noticed that the SD card had been assigned the letter G. After checking to make sure the utility works with Windows 10 (it does) and that I have the latest version (I do), and that it's installed and active (it is), I did what any respectable person who's ever programmed for a living would do—I rebooted my computer.

No joy.

And then I recalled that even before Windows 10, there were some aspects of SD card storage that didn't quite qualify such devices to be treated like a drive (for example, partitioning it, as one could in Linux), and right now, my working hypothesis is that you don't get to assign letters to storage devices that Windows does not recognize as drives.

In any event, after editing my .emacs file, everything has returned to its former copacetic state.

Moreover, Ten™ has yet to crash on me, which for the nonce makes me a very happy camper.

In other news, I finally got all the obstacles out of the way to setting up the therapy that my "old" oncologist deemed essential six weeks ago. In yet other news, Blue Cross has approved my application as a small business "group" (though it's be even niftier if, having notified me of this, they provide me with the data to get the "group" actually going).

However, things are what they are; full speed ahead! Tomorrow is going to be a great day!

Cheers...
