A love–hate relationship...
Aug. 23rd, 2016 01:52 pmRussian technical language abounds in the use of the word "комплекс," which transliterates very neatly into the English "complex," except that in Russian text, the word is used almost exclusively as a noun, e.g., "the control complex," denoting all of the various hardware, etc. that makes up what English-speakers would call either simply a "control system" or, if we're talking about a collection of such systems, perhaps a "control package."
Any day when I find myself having no better alternative for "комплекс" to use in an English translation than "complex" is a day I feel I have, somehow, failed.
Today has been one of those days.
More later, as I have a deadline breathing fire down my neck.
