Ever since returning to taiji after my bypass, I've been treated as "that kid" who you can't risk hitting too hard in the course of various activities ("freestyle," in particular), lest all the healing that's been going on with the rib cage and sternum becomes undone.

There's a part of me that appreciates this consideration. Another part sort of resents it. Go figure.

Our class last night was in the middle of doing a "balance" exercise—which involves doing a tui shou circle with an opponent, with the two of you testing each others' balance—when my opponent was able to successfully take me off balance with a double push to the chest (did I mention I suck at this?) and immediately expressed concern about my well-being, as the push had been delivered rather forcefully.

I was okay, both physically and mentally (I may suck now, but I'll get better, just wait!), at which point it occurred to me to wonder—has it been a year?

Yes it has. A year ago today, I underwent a triple bypass operation.

It's been a great (if bumpy) year!

Cheers...

Wow, a year now! And you seem to be doing very well, overall, so it was worth it and it did a good job. Congratulations!

And forward, ever forward.

Oh wow! I hope your heart continues to do very well! I'm also glad I read this today, as my mom is in the hospital with chest pains and if it comes to surgery, which we don't know if it will, because we don't know what's wrong, but anyway, if it does, I'll keep you in mind. It's good to remind myself people do have surgeries and do really well afterward. :)
