What a nice evening!

This, despite the fact that I'd apparently forgotten how to cook pot roast, although the primary complaint (from Galina, Miss I'll-Have-Mine-Well-Done), was that the roast was too well done.

Ah, well. Everyone's a critic.

I made up for it though, with a very nice mushroom/potato/leek/chicken soup. That pot's going to go fast.

Anyway, the kids are gone, and I've a notion to translate a couple of pages, if only to lighten the load for the rest of the week, but first... where was I? Oh, yes...

Huntur and I were out walking and found some green shoots. I picked a couple and they smelled like scallion (though I'm sure they aren't). I dug one up, which is not easy in our rocky ground, and found a bulb about the size of a quail egg at the bottom of one of the shoots. It was purple. I don't know enough about plants to tell if it can be eaten, but we're not exactly hurting in the onion department, so I didn't bother trying. But it did remind me that we had a small pine tree in the house taking sustenance from water in a small cup. I'd found the poor thing in an inauspicious place where it was going to get ground into rubble by some construction equipment, and taken it home.

Figuring any soil that smells like soil and which can support those little oniony things was better than plain water, I rounded up a pot, some of that soil (which Huntur helped me collect) and then the kid and I sat down to the business of planting the little tree.

I don't know about Huntur, but I had a lot of fun.

For some reason, I figured the kids would be out camping for most of the day, so I bundled Huntur in her car seat and we went down to the City Market to stock up on some food. Huntur had an interesting "conversation" with the lady behind the deli counter, who graciously allowed us to sample a slice of honey ham and compare it with the black forest variety. I caught a few folks giving me strange looks, since I was talking to Huntur in a normal voice and showing her the various things that were in the store and saying things to her about them as if she were much, much older. For my part, I've never really been a big fan of spewing baby-talk at infants.

When I pulled up the driveway, the kids were already there, and I could tell that Shannon simply could not wait to see Huntur (she was jumping up and down and stuff, or at least that's what it looked like to me as I was negotiating the last curve into the parking area).

Once the future generations were gone, Galina went and took a nap. I made some strawberry Jello (with real strawberries and sliced bananas) and put it in the fridge for it to set, then made up some sugar water for the hummingbirds (we're out of their food, but I suspect there's no hummers left about now), and finally put the pot roast on to cook on very low heat, surrounded by potatoes, carrots, and mushrooms. That done, I likewise took a nap for 90 minutes. When I got up, everything was developing nicely.

After dinner, while everyone else was out on the porch, I happened to look off to the side of the dinner table and saw something along the lines of a nice still life:

Anyway, the kids have gone and Galina is upstairs watching the tube. Once this post is done, I plant to put a small dent in tomorrow's translation load, and then hit the hay.

Cheers...
