Today was both Huntur's first day at pre-school and Shannon's first day on the job. I went home around noon and went to sleep for about an hour and a half, then got up and did some work around the place. I haven't heard any news from the insurance guy, but Galina left what amounts to a blank check at the insurance office in Durango for when the decision (favorable, I trust) comes through.

The local insurance guy came by the store to talk to me, and we had a good conversation. I'm thinking I may have been premature in engaging the Durango folks, since the fellow who stopped by seemed a bit sharper and more on the ball than the lady I've been dealing with in Durango. If the bond is nor forthcoming as a result of my last submittal, I'll start over with the Pagosa fellow tomorrow.

I paid my Amex bill, as usual, by phone, and it was under $200 for the previous month, which has to be some kind of world record (i.e., small, though I'm not complaining, and in fact am relieved).

* * *There seems to be a lot of Al Pacino on the tube lately. I'm noticing that Insomnia is on HBO lately, which has also been playing a lot of Godfather and Godfather II. Scent of a Woman was playing a little while ago on AMC (their "Men Women Love To Watch" theme, if memory serves), and then... it occurs to me that The Recruit was seen on DVD and not on broadcast/cable, but nonetheless, Pacino starred there, too. All excellent performances, IMAO (though I've never been a keen fan of the Godfather movies).

* * *Our visit to Feht's the other night reminded me that the ATA conference is not far away, and an email from headquarters reminds me that the deadline for "earlybird" registration is Wednesday. In other news, I'm mildly curious as to whether anyone else has tossed their hat into the ring for the postition of Slavic Language Division administrator; if not, then the rules say I'll be elected by acclamation (meaning, I suppose, there will be no formal ballot). Another email reminds me that I'll be up for certification during my next stint in Houston.

All of which leads up to the point that tomorrow, 30 September, is St. Jerome's Day in some Western belief systems. St. Jerome, it is said, is the patron saint of translators (seeing as he was one), and thus, through an inescapable sequence of logic that I'm not too clear on, that makes tomorrow... Translator's Day!

Did you see the original Insomnia? Stellan Skarsgard plays the character Pacino takes on. It's a much creepier version, done in a style of torment and depression that only Scandanavians can really do.

No, I wasn't aware that the Pacino/Williams effort was built on a previous film (though it doesn't surprise me). That it's Scandinavian makes it fairly unlikely that it'll cross my screen any time soon, unfortunately.
