Plumb... tuckered... out!

alexpgpThe phone call I got while at the ham breakfast came too early to be from a client. Sure enough, it was from Drew. Whatever had held him in its clutches a couple of days ago was back, with a vengeance. He was well and truly out for the day.
I opened the store and did the postal report with remarkably little coaching (I called Drew once to find out where the deposit slips were and to make sure all the pieces were going to be there... the post office is, lest we forget, a bureaucracy). When I got back from submitting the report and picking up mail, Shannon had joined Galina and I left soon afterward (around 10:15 am or so) to go home and start putting a dent in the day's translation.
The document is a training manual whose deadline has been accelerated to Monday morning, which ought to be doable unless the fates conspire. I translated about 2000 source words last night and another 2000 or so source words between getting home and getting a call around 2 pm to go back in to the store and help with package processing.
By the time everything had been processed, it was after 5 pm and I was beat. Galina and I came home, I cooked some odds and ends (it said so right on the package! Alors, je plaisante!) and I went downstairs to finish the day's quota. Which I did with about 300 words to spare. There are just over 6,000 source words left in the assignment.
* * * It occurs to me that over the past year, I've slowly gone from thinking of assignments in terms of target words translated per day to source words translated per day. The difference is not insignificant, because given a text where ceteris paribus, Russian tends to expand 15% to 25% when translated into English.
Just a thought, and I aside from wondering how it was I egged myself on to be more productive, I can't see the point of dwelling on the subject.
I can, however, see the point of going upstairs and giving Galina a foot rub. :^)
